This site is almost certainly cooler if you’re familiar with NYC; from what I’ve read, the buildings are pretty much still the same all these years later.
You can even switch to “satellite” view.
Anyway, the site is very well done, and the photos are worth browsing.

NYC has some nice aerial maps from 1924 and 1951 (as well as more modern times). The NYCityMap site seems a bit broken, but https://maps.nyc.gov/then&now/ works. JFK (Idlewild) Airport is quite fascinating on the 51 map. It’s a pity they don’t have any maps between ‘51 and ‘96 though, lots of interesting changes happening then.

I’m trying to imagine what it took to photograph the entire city. Must have been a massive undertaking. I remember reading about that project at one time.

Looks like the Schwartz & Zuckerman dry goods store is now an H&M

H&M got hit hard by the pandemic. I wonder if it that particular store is still in business.

If it is, I bet the front is more plywood than glass at this point.

It turns out it is an ice cream shop/ event center thing now. The H&M folded between 2017-19

That store looks to have folded a few years ago. It’s some sort of ice cream/cafe/bar thing.

Wonder if that's even still open?

Their website and social media is all pretty active so I think they are still around.

Also interesting to swipe between when Idlewild wasn’t there and when it was. What a massive project.

Yep, clearly anticipating (correctly) an explosion of air travel.

explosion of air travel.
TWA 800 says, “Too soon.”

I would just like to say that I have *never* shot any missiles in the vicinity of JFK

Pic has a very prewar look to it - all cars are prewar and don’t appear to be worn out or anything. I’d be surprised if this isn’t more like 80 years old, roughly 1940 by the cars.
Oops, decided to click the link, there it is.

Yep, for some reason I was thinking 1941-46 and rounded down. Oops.
